Public health system in Poland is available to all citiziens. European Union citiziens are also eligible to receive treatments in public health facilities in Poland free of charge. The structure of the public health system in Poland is in some ways very similar to the structure of the NHS in the UK. The Narodowy Fundusz Zdrowia (NFZ) is the institution that manages the health funds in Poland. Around 9% of the income is deducted from salaries and paid to the NFZ in order to mainatin the public health system in the country. Some specialist treatments are funded directly by the Ministry of Health. Patients registered with the local GP can be refered to a specialist or a hospital if more advanced treatments or diagnosis are needed. Although public health system in Poland is available to all citiziens, waiting lists for specialist treatments tend to be long. Due to relatively low cost of private medical services in the country many residents tend to use such facilities instead.
